CONSTRUCTION OF PAVEMENTS AND EVENNESS - RESULTS OF FIRST MEASUREMENTS

CONSTRUCTIONS DES CHAUSSEES ET UNI - RESULTATS DES PREMIERES MESURES

THE AUTHORS RECALL THE INTEREST OF THE EVOLUTION IN THE EVENNESS OF THE VARIOUS PAVEMENT LAYERS TO EVALUATE THE QUALITY OF LAYING OPERATIONS. MEASUREMENTS WERE TAKEN ON 38 CONSTRUCTION SITES. FOR THE WHOLE OF THE SITES (MOTORWAY, MAIN ROAD, STRENGTHENING, RESURFACING OR LEVELLING SITES) AND FOR EACH OF THE 3 MAIN LAYERS (SUBBASE, BASE AND SURFACING) THE SPECTRAL CONCENTRATION CURVE WAS PLOTTED, AND THE MEAN VARIANCE AND STANDARD DEVIATION WERE CALCULATED. BASED ON THESE CALCULATIONS, VARIANCE AND DEFLECTIVE ENVELOPES WERE ESTABLISHED; THE MEAN VALUE OF THE DEFLECTIONS IS SHOWN GRAPHICALLY FOR EACH OF THE THREE FOLLOWING WAVE LENGTHS: 1 TO 3,3 M, 3,3 TO 12,5 M, 12,5 TO 40 M. THE OBSERVATION OF THE GRAPHS SHOWS THAT, FOR THE 3 RANGES OF WAVE LENGTH, A MARKED IMPROVEMENT IN LEVELS OF EVENNESS BETWEEN SURFACING LAYERS TAKES PLACE; THE IMPROVEMENT IS LESS MARKED IN THE LONG WAVE RANGE; IN THE LONG WAVE RANGE IT SEEMS THAT THE LEVEL OF EVENNESS OF THE SUBBASE HAS A DETERMINING INFLUENCE ON THAT OF THE SURFACING.
