CONCRETE PAVEMENT DESIGN - PRESENT CHOICE IN FRANCE

CONCEPTION DES CHAUSSEES EN BETON - LES CHOIX ACTUELS EN FRANCE

THE TECHNIQUE USED IN FRANCE TILL 1975 WAS THAT OF SHORT SLABS WITHOUT DOWELS RESTING ON A GRAVEL SUBBASE STABILIZED WITH HYDRAULIC BINDERS, THE EMERGENCY STOPPING LANE BEING ALSO STABILIZED. SOME DISORDERS (PUMPING), ON RECENT SECTIONS LED TO AN IN-DEPTH STUDY: SETTING UP OF A WORKING GROUP, RESEARCH PROGRAMMES, JOURNEYS TO FOREIGN COUNTRIES, CONSTRUCTION OF EXPERIMENTAL SECTIONS. THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE MAIN CONCLUSIONS REACHED AND THE ANALYTICAL PROCESS FOLLOWED. IT WAS SHOWN THAT THE METHOD WITHOUT DOWELS COULD BE CONSIDERED AT THE PRESENT TIME IN FRANCE AS A SATISFACTORY TECHNICAL, ECONOMIC COMPROMISE. HOWEVER, AS THERE EXISTED INADEQUATE DRAINAGE IN EXISTING STRUCTURES AT THE SLAB/FOUNDATION INTERFACE AND A TENDENCY TO EROSION IN THE SUBBASE, THE FOLLOWING SOLUTIONS WERE SELECTED FOR HEAVILY-TRAFFICKED LANES: USE OF POROUS CONCRETE FOR EMERGENCY STOPPING LANES; USE OF VIBRATED LEAN CONCRETE FOR THE SUBBASE. THE "THICK SLAB" STRUCTURE, WHERE THE SLAB IS RESTING DIRECTLY ON A DRAINAGE OR STABILIZED IMPROVED SUBGRADE APPEARED TO BE A NEW INTERESTING SOLUTION.
