STUDY OF LANDSLIDES IN THE VILLAGE OF BEAUSSET (VAR)

ETUDE DES GLISSEMENTS DE TERRAINS SURVENUS DANS LA COMMUNE DU BEAUSSET (VAR)

HEAVY RAIN IN FEBRUARY AND MARCH 1974 TRIGGERED OFF AGAIN LANDSLIDES AND MUD FLOWS AFFECTING THE VILLAGE OF VIEUX-BEAUSSET LOCATED 17 KM NORTH-WEST OF TOULON. THE MAGNITUDE OF THE MOVEMENTS MADE IT NECESSARY TO EVACUATE SOME HOUSES AND TO STOP BUILDING OPERATIONS ON A NUMBER OF SITES. THE ZONE CONCERNED COVERS APPROXIMATELY 90 HECTARES. SOME PARTS OF IT WERE ALREADY AFFECTED IN 1936, 1966 AND 1972. GEOLOGICALLY THE BEAUSSET SITE IS A KLIPPE CONSISTING OF THE REMAINS OF A TRIASSIC OVERTHRUST PLATE WHICH COVERED THE UPPER CRETACEAN (MARL). THE COMPLEX GEOLOGICAL CONDITIONS ARE REFLECTED IN THE COMPLEX HYDRAULIC CONDITIONS. FURTHERMORE, SOIL HETEROGENEITY MAKES THE GEOTECHNICAL STUDY DIFFICULT. BECAUSE OF THE MAGNITUDE OF THE DISORDERS AND OF THE VALUE OF THIS URBANIZED ZONE, THE COUNCIL OF BEAUSSET REQUESTED THAT REMEDIAL MEASURES BE TAKEN; THESE MEASURES ARE DESCRIBED IN THIS ARTICLE.
