CALCULATION AND MEASUREMENT OF LUMINANCE AND ILLUMINANCE IN ROAD LIGHTING - COMPUTER PROGRAM FOR LUMINANCE, ILLUMINANCE AND GLARE

THIS REPORT DOES NOT REPRESENT OFFICIAL SPECIFICATIONS; NO RECOMMENDATION GIVEN IS MANDATORY. THE AIM OF THE REPORT IS TO DESCRIBE METHODS FOR THE FULL CALCULATION OF THE LUMINANCE DISTRIBUTION OF A ROAD IN THE CASE OF A FIXED INSTALLATION, TO SHOW THE PRINCIPLES OF THESE CALCULATIONS AND TO RECOMMEND STANDARDIZED METHODS FOR LUMINANCE MEASUREMENTS. GRAPHIC METHODS ARE DESCRIBED TOGETHER WITH TWO COMPUTER PROGRAMS. ONE IS A SIMPLE CONVENTIONAL PROGRAM, USABLE FOR STRAIGHT SECTIONS OF ROAD AND FOR INSTALLATIONS OF FAIRLY SIMPLE GEOMETRY. IT FACILITATES THE PRACTICAL TREATMENT OF ALL GEOMETRIC CONDITIONS OF ROADS AND INSTALLATIONS, BUT CAN BE APPLIED TO MORE COMPLEX SITUATIONS. THESE BASIC PROGRAMS CAN BE UTILIZED AS THEY ARE FOR THE DESIGN OF ROAD LIGHTING INSTALLATIONS, OR CAN BE ADAPTED TO SPECIFIC CASES, FOR EXAMPLE, BY BEING INCORPORATED IN MORE SOPHISTICATED PROGRAMS FOR THE OPTIMIZATION OF LIGHTING INSTALLATIONS, ECONOMIC CALCULATIONS, ETC. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE ALSO PUT FORWARD FOR MEASURING THE REFLECTING PROPERTIES OF ROAD SURFACINGS, AND A SIMPLIFIED METHOD OF DESCRIBING REFLECTING PROPERTIES BY USING 3 PARAMETERS IS PROPOSED. THIS METHOD CAN BE USED AS A BASIS FOR A SYSTEM OF ROAD SURFACING CLASSIFICATION.
