THE SAINT NAZAIRE-SAINT BREVIN BRIDGE. PART 3: THE MAIN METAL STRUCTURE

A DETAILED DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF THE CENTRAL METAL PART WHICH HOLDS THE WORLD RECORD FOR THE LENGTH OF SPAN OF A STAYED GIRDER BRIDGE (404 M BETWEEN THE SUPPORT AXES. THIS BRIDGE IS THE LONGEST IN FRANCE AND THE THIRD IN LENGTH IN EUROPE WITH A LENGTH OF 3350 M): (1) THE DECK CONSISTS OF A WELDED STEEL PLATE CAISSON (720 M), THE THICKNESS OF THE STEEL PLATES VARYING FROM 12 TO 15 MM EXCEPT AT THE ANCHORAGE POINTS OF THE STAYED GIRDERS (80 MM). A SPECIAL STEEL CONTAINING NIOBIUM WAS USED FOR THE SAKE OF WELDABILITY. THE DECK RESTS ON THE MAIN PIERS BY MEANS OF NEOPRENE BEARINGS; (2) BRIDGE TOWERS; (3) THE STAYED GIRDERS CONSIST OF CABLES OF THE CLOSED STRAND TYPE, 72 TO 105 MM IN DIAMETER, THE LAST TWO LAYERS OF WIRE BEING GALVANIZED. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE MANUFACTURE, TRANSPORT AND ERECTION OF ALL THE STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS. THE CARRIAGEWAY IS 12 M WIDE, COMPRISES AN ORTHOTROPIC SLAB WITH A 6 CM THICK BITUMINOUS SURFACING. THE ANTI-CORROSION TREATMENT IS GUARANTEED FOR 10 YEARS. ZINC PAINT APPLIED ON SANDED STEEL PLATES COVERED WITH A LAYER OF EPOXY RESIN, AND ACRYLIC RESIN OR POLYURETHANE. DEFLECTING DEVICES ARE INCORPORATED IN THE DECK TO MINIMIZE VIBRATIONS AT CERTAIN WIND SPEEDS AND TO INCREASE THE COMFORT OF THE USER. SEE ALSO IRRD ABSTRACT NOS 106292-3, 106295.
