THE SOIL INDUCED BENDING STRESSES ON PILES

THIS REPORT IS A THESIS FOR A DOCTORATE IN TECHNICAL SCIENCES PRESENTED TO THE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING OF THE LAUSANNE FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC. FROM AN ANALYSIS OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF SEVERAL REAL STRUCTURES, AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO DETERMINE THE GENERAL CONDITIONS WHEREIN SOIL INDUCED BENDING STRESSES ARE PREJUDICIAL TO PILES OR THE STRUCTURES WHICH THEY SUPPORT. A METHOD IS PROPOSED FOR CALCULATING THE EARTH PRESSURES ON PILES, THEIR DEFORMATION AND THE MOMENTS TO WHICH THEY ARE SUBJECTED. SOME RULES ARE FORMULATED FOR SELECTING THE MECHANICAL SOIL CHARACTERISTICS USED IN THE CALCULATION. TO JUDGE THE VALIDITY OF THESE RULES AND THE CALCULATION METHOD, THREE CASES OF REAL LOADING WERE ANALYZED AND THE THEORETICAL DISPLACEMENTS AND MOMENTS WERE COMPARED WITH MEASURED VALUES. SUPPLEMENTARY HYPOTHESES TO BE MADE WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF PROJECT PLANNING WERE DEFINED, AND SOME CONSTRUCTIVE MEASURES INDICATED TO REDUCE THE BENDING STRESSES IN PILES.
