FORECAST OF PERFORMANCE OF EXPLOSIVES IN MASS BLASTING

PREVISION DES PERFORMANCES DES EXPLOSIFS DANS LES TIRS EN MASSE

(TRANSLATION INTO FRENCH OF AN ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN THE JOURNAL OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN INSTITUTE OF MINING AND METALURGY, FEB 1975.) CERTAIN PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED IN THE CALCULATION OF PONDERAL ENERGY RELATING TO EXPLOSIVES ARE DISCUSSED, AND A MODEL OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF EXPLOSIVES IS PROPOSED. THE HEAT TRANSFER OF CONDENSED PRODUCTS TOWARDS GASEOUS PRODUCTS IS CALCULATED AS A FUNCTION OF TIME, AND THE RELATION BETWEEN PRESSURE AND VOLUME OF THE GASEOUS PRODUCTS IS OBTAINED BY TAKING ACCOUNT OF THE COMPRESSION OF THE ROCK BETWEEN RADIAL FISSURES. THE EFFORT APPLIED TO THE FRONT IS ASSUMED TO CEASE WHEN FISSURES APPEAR AT THE FACE. REASONABLE VALUES OF THE SPEED OF THE FRONT AND FISSURES ARE OBTAINED WITH THE AID OF THE MODEL. THE CALCULATION OF THE RELATIVE PONDERAL ENERGY OF MIXTURES OF AMMONIUM NITRATE, FUEL OIL AND ALUMINIUM SHOWS THAT THE INCREASE IN DENSITY IS THE MAIN ADVANTAGE OF ADDING ALUMINIUM.
