GENERAL PRINCIPLES FOR THE VERIFICATION OF THE SAFETY OF STRUCTURES - FIRST EDITION

THIS INTERNATIONAL STANDARD SPECIFIES THE GENERAL PRINCIPLES WHICH GOVERN THE VERIFICATION OF THE SAFETY OF STRUCTURES; THESE PRINCIPLES DEFINE A METHOD FOR CALCULATING THE BEHAVIOUR AND STRENGTH OF STRUCTURES SUBJECTED TO KNOWN OR FORESEEABLE STRESSES WITH A VIEW TO ENSURING AN APPROPRIATE DEGREE OF SAFETY. SAFETY IS CONSIDERED AS A FUNCTION OF THE STRENGTH OF THE STRUCTURE, AND OF THE QUALITIES, PROPERTIES OR CHARACTERISTICS ASSOCIATED WITH THE DURABILITY OF THE STRUCTURE. THE CALCULATION METHOD IS BASED ON EXPERIMENTAL DATA AND SCIENTIFIC THEORIES INTERPRETED STATISTICALLY. THE GENERAL PRINCIPLES CAN BE APPLIED TO COMPLETED STRUCTURES, MEMBERS AND FOUNDATIONS. THE PRINCIPLES APPLY TO THE SERVICE TIME OF THE STRUCTURE, THE CONSTRUCTION PERIOD, MANUFACTURE OF THE MEMBERS, DURING TRANSPORT AND ERECTION ON SITE.
