METHODS OF ANALYSIS OF DISCONTINUOUS ROCK MASSES WITH A NON-LINEAR BEHAVIOUR. DOCTORATE OF ENGINEERING THESIS

METHODES DE CALCUL DES MASSIFS DISCONTINUS A COMPORTEMENT NON LINEAIRE - THESE DE DOCTEUR INGENIEUR

THE AIM OF THIS WORK IS THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A FINITE ELEMENT PROGRAM FOR ANALYZING THE CASE OF A DISCONTINUOUS MEDIUM WITH A NON-LINEAR BEHAVIOUR. IN ADDITION, AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO IMPROVE THE THEORETICAL REPRESENTATION OF COUPLING PHENOMENA BY MEANS OF ENERGY EQUATIONS, WHILE KEEPING WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF ROCK MECHANICS. THE FIRST SECTION DESCRIBES EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES OF THE PHYSICAL LAWS WHICH GOVERN THIS TYPE OF PHENOMENON. STRESS IS PLACED ON THE IMPORTANCE OF JOINT EXPANSION PHENOMENA FOR MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR, AND TURBULENT FLOW FOR HYDRAULIC BEHAVIOUR. AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO DEMONSTRATE THE IMPORTANCE OF SUCH PHENOMENA AND SOME HISTORICAL EXAMPLES ARE QUOTED. IN THE SECOND PART AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO IMPROVE THE DESCRIPTION OF SUCH PHENOMENA AS THEY HAVE BEEN VIEWED BY SOW, LOUIS AND TAYLOR. AN ENERGY FORMULA IS ESTABLISHED FOR COUPLING, BASED ON THE CONSOLIDATION EQUATIONS. DIFFERENT NUMERICAL PROCEDURES FOR RESOLVING NON-LINEAR SYSTEMS ARE COMPARED. FINALLY, THE THIRD PART PRESENTS THE CALCULATION PROGRAM WHICH HAS BEEN INTEGRATED INTO THE ROSALIE PROGRAM OF THE LABORATOIRE CENTRAL DES PONTS ET CHAUSSEES. SOME USES ARE GIVEN, AND A COMPARISON OF THE RESULTS WITH THOSE GAINED FROM EXPERIENCE IS PRESENTED. SEE ALSO IRRD ABSTRACTS NOS 900002 AND 900003.
