THE NEED FOR A BETTER KNOWLEDGE OF THE DEFORMATION AND FAILURE MECHANISMS OF ROCK MEDIA HAS LED TO STUDIES OF ROCK MECHANICS OVER THE LAST TEN YEARS. THIS REPORT DESCRIBES THE STATE OF THE ART OF ROCK MECHANICS APPLIED TO CIVIL ENGINEERING. AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO ESTABLISH A RELATION BETWEEN ROCK MECHANICS AND SOIL MECHANICS AND ENGINEERING GEOLOGY. THE FIRST CHAPTERS DEAL WITH DISCONTINUITIES, THE STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS AND BEHAVIOUR OF ROCK MEDIA AT THE LABORATORY SCALE AND IN REAL ROCK. PART 2 CONSIDERS APPLICATIONS TO STRUCTURES FOUNDED ON OR SUNK IN ROCK: ROCK SLOPES, ENGINEERING STRUCTURES, UNDERGROUND STRUCTURES. THE FINAL CHAPTER IS DEVOTED TO THE NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING AS A MEANS OF CONTROL. AN EXTENSIVE BIBLIOGRAPHY IS APPENDED.
