THE PROTECTION OF LOCK GEAR AGAINST CORROSION IN THE PORT OF DUNKERQUE

PROTECTION ANTICORROSION DES EQUIPEMENTS DES ECLUSES DU PORT AUTONOME DE DUNKERQUE

THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE SYSTEMS OF PROTECTION AGAINST CORROSION TESTED ON SEA LOCK GEAR IN THE PORT OF DUNKERQUE, THE RESULTS OBTAINED AND THE SYSTEMS RECOMMENDED FOR LONG-TERM PROTECTION. ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE FOLLOWING FACTS: (1) PAINT AND A CATHODIC PROTECTION SYSTEM MUST BE COMBINED IF PROTECTION IS TO BE LASTING AND EFFICIENT; (2) THE QUALITY OF A PROTECTIVE SYSTEM BASED ON ZINC METALLIZATION IS NOT PROPORTIONAL TO THE THICKNESS OF THE METALLIZATION SYSTEM BUT TO THAT OF THE COAT OF PAINT WHICH COVERS IT; (3) PAINTS WITH HIGH ZINC CONTENT COMPETE WITH ZINC METALLIZATION, AND THICK COATS DO NOT ALWAYS MEAN INCREASED EFFICIENCY; (4) ELECTRICAL CATHODIC PROTECTION HAS ADVANTAGES, PROVIDED THAT THE DESIGN OF THE STRUCTURE TESTED IS SUCH THAT EXCESS VOLTAGE IS AVOIDED AT ANY POINT.
