COMPUTERIZED STUDY OF THE PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES

THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES HOW MIX DESIGN FORMULAE ARE DERIVED AT THE BP "LABORATOIRE CENTRAL D'APPLICATIONS DES PETROLES". A COMPUTER IS USED TO DETERMINE THE GRADING CURVE OF THE MIXTURE. THE INITIAL DATA USED ARE THE PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION OF THE INGREDIENTS AND THE GRADING ENVELOPE OF THE SPECIFICATION FOR THE MIXTURE. FOLLOWING THE SELECTION OF A MODEL CURVE WHICH USUALLY HAS A MATHEMATICAL SHAPE WITH A MINIMUM OF VOIDS, AN OPTIMIZATION STUDY IS CARRIED OUT BY MEANS OF A GIVEN COMPUTER PROGRAM. THE GRADING ENVELOPE AND CURVES ARE VISUALIZED ON PAPER AT THE COMPUTER TERMINAL. THE FLEXIBILITY OF THE PROGRAM IS SUCH THAT THE OPERATOR CAN CONVERSE WITH THE MACHINE AND INTRODUCE NEW CONSTRAINTS, E.G. DETERMINE THE FINES CONTENT, SAND OR GRAVEL PERCENTAGE ETC. IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE TO DETERMINE THE LOWEST GRADING COST AND TO EVALUATE ITS IMPORTANCE AS REGARDS TECHNOLOGY. THIS METHOD GIVES ACCURATE AND RELIABLE FORMULAE IN A MATTER OF MINUTES.
