EVALUATION OF THE PULL-OUT TEST TO DETERMINE STRENGTH OF IN SITU CONCRETE

A CERTAIN CORRELATION PERCENTAGE EXISTS BETWEEN THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF 15 X 30 CM CYLINDRICAL CONCRETE TEST SAMPLES KEPT UNDER STANDARD CONDITIONS AND THE PULL-OUT STRENGTH OF CONCRETE KEPT UNDER SITE CONDITIONS. THE RATIO OF PULL-OUT FORCE TO COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF THE CONCRETE. AT 3 DAYS, THE RATIO VARIES FROM 18% FOR CONCRETE OF 32.9 MN/M2 TO 46% FOR 7.9 MN/M2. HOWEVER, FOR A GIVEN STRENGTH THE RATIO VARIES LITTLE WITH TIME. FOR THE SAME MIX, THE PULL-OUT LOAD INCREASES WITH TIME, WHICH SHOWS THE EVENTUAL INTEREST OF SUCH TESTS FOR COMPARATIVE STUDIES. THE STANDARD DEVIATION AND COEFFICIENT OF VARIATION OF THE 28 DAY STRENGTH FROM THE TEST RESULTS OF PULL-OUT LOAD VARY FROM 0.10 TO 0.31 MN/M2 AND 2.3 TO 5.0% RESPECTIVELY. THE CORRESPONDING VALUES GIVEN BY THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH ARE 0.03 TO 0.82 MN/M2 AND 0.2 TO 0.3% RESPECTIVELY, EXCEPT FOR ONE BATCH FOR WHICH THE CORRESPONDING FIGURES ARE 4.7 MN/M2 AND 11.4%.(A)
