A LABORATORY STUDY OF THE USE OF SULPHUR IN SAND-ASPHALT MIXES FOR FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS. DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE COLLEGE OF TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENT FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY

THE SAND-ASPHALT-SULPHUR MIXES STUDIED COMPRISED COMMERCIAL QUALITY CRYSTALLINE SULPHUR (99.5 PLUS OR MINUS PURITY), THREE DIFFERENT GRADINGS OF NATURAL SAND AND BITUMEN OF TWO DIFFERENT STANDARD PENETRATIONS. THE INFLUENCE OF THE MATERIALS AND INSTALLATION FACTORS ON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES AND A PRELIMINARY COMPARISON OF TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF MIXES WITH CONVENTIONAL BITUMINOUS CONCRETES USING WELL GRADED CRUSHED CALCAREOUS AGGREGATE WERE STUDIED. THE VARIABLES TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT HAVE BEEN: (1) FOR THE MATERIALS, THE SAND-BITUMEN-SULPHUR RATIO, BITUMEN TYPE, SAND TYPE; (2) FOR INSTALLATION, THE MIXING TEMPERATURE, MIXING TIME, CURING TIME, COMPACTION. THE MARSHALL AND HVEEM STABILITY, MIX DENSITY, VOID RATIO, TENSILE STRENGTH, RIGIDITY AND THERMAL BEHAVIOUR OF THE MIXES HAVE BEEN DETERMINED. EXPANSION TESTS HAVE ALSO BEEN CARRIED OUT TO STUDY THE USE OF THIS TEST TECHNIQUE TO CHARACTERIZE AND EVALUATE THE MATERIALS STABILIZED WITH BITUMEN. COMPARISONS OF SIZE FOR SAND-BITUMEN-SULPHUR MIXES AND CONVENTIONAL BITUMINOUS CONCRETE WERE MADE UTILIZING THE ANALYSIS OF ELASTIC STRATIFIED MEDIA, AND ON THIS BASIS AN ECONOMIC EVALUATION WAS CARRIED OUT.
