DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS USED IN MOTORWAY CONSTRUCTION IN FRANCE IN 1975. THE PAVEMENT STRUCTURES OF THE RHONE-ALPES MOTORWAY ARE DESCRIBED: THEY CONSIST OF HIGH-QUALITY BITUMINOUS UPPER LAYERS RESTING ON A THICK FOUNDATION. DATA ARE ALSO PRESENTED ON THE PAVEMENT STRUCTURES OF THE A11 ILLIERS-SAINT BOMER MOTORWAY: (A) THICK IMPROVED SUBGRADE CONSISTING OF RUN-OF-MINE ORE OR SAND ON NATURAL STABILIZED GROUND; (B) ROADBASE MADE WITH GRAVEL-BITUMEN; (C) BITUMINOUS BASECOURSE AND AN ASPHALTIC CONCRETE WEARING COURSE. THE THIRD EXAMPLE GIVEN IS THAT OF THE A15 TANCARVILLE-HARFLEUR EXPRESSWAY. THE ROAD IS BUILT ON A LOW-QUALITY SOIL; THE SUB-BASE AND THE ROADBASE ARE BUILT WITH A GRAVEL-BITUMEN MIXTURE.
