STUDY OF THE PRINCIPAL PARAMETERS GOVERNING THE ADHESION BETWEEN A MACROMOLECULAR COATING AND A METALLIC SUB-STRATUM

ETUDE DES PRINCIPAUX PARAMETRES GOUVERNANT L'ADHESION D'UN REVETEMENT MACROMOLECULAIRE A UN SUBSTRAT METALLIQUE

THE ADHESION OF A SYSTEM, COMPOSED OF AN ESTERIFIED EPOXY RESIN DEPOSITED BY ELECTROLYSIS ON A METAL, WAS STUDIED WITH THE AID OF A PEELING TEST. IT WAS SHOWN THAT THE ULTIMATE ENERGY OF A SYSTEM DEPENDS BASICALLY ON THE RHEOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF POLYMER. DURING THE FIRST DAYS AFTER THE PREPARATION OF THE SYSTEM, ITS ADHESION EVOLVES CONSIDERABLY, THIS EVOLUTION BEING DUE TO THE AGEING OF THE POLYMER FILM. THIS AGEING RESULTS FROM THE DIFFUSION OF OXYGEN IN THE ATMOSPHERE IN THE POLYMER LEADING TO A NETWORK OF OXIDATION OF UNSATURATED FATTY ACID CHAINS. THIS PHENOMENON IS REPLACED, DEPENDING ON THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE POLYMER, BY AN INCREASE IN THE TEMPERATURE OF VITREOUS TRANSITION AND THUS, BY A MODIFICATION IN ITS RHEOLOGICAL BEHAVIOUR. THE STATE OF THE SURFACE OF THE METAL SUB-STRATUM, MODIFIED BY THE CHEMICAL CONVERSION TREATMENT, INFLUENCES TO AN EQUAL DEGREE THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE SEPARATION OF THE ELECTRO DEPOSIT. THE RESULTS OBTAINED SUGGEST, IN FACT, THAT BREAK-DOWN OCCURS IN A COHESIVE FASHION IN THE CONVERSION LAYER OF THE METAL AND THAT THE ADHESION OF THE MACROMOLECULAR COATING DEPENDS ON THE COHESION ENERGY OF THIS LAYER.
