STUDY OF THE PROTECTION OF PAINTED METALS BY MEASUREMENT OF THE RESISTANCE TO POLARISATION

ETUDE DE LA PROTECTION DES METAUX PEINTS PAR MESURE DE RESISTANCE DE POLARISATION

THIS EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE CONSISTS IN THE MEASUREMENT OF THE RESISTANCE TO POLARISATION OF METAL PROTECTED BY A FILM-FORMING COATING WITH CURVES L = F (E) RECORDED ON BOTH SIDES OF THE EQUILIBRIUM POTENTIAL. THE AUTHORS HAVE EXAMINED THE IMPORTANCE OF CERTAIN OPERATING PARAMETERS (ELECTROLYTE CONCENTRATION, SPEED OF POTENTIAL SCANNING) AND INTRINSIC CHARACTERISTIC OF THE COATINGS (NATURE OF BINDER, OF PIGMENT, THICKNESS OF FILM) FOR THE VALUE OF THE RESISTANCE TO POLARISATION. IT APPEARS THAT THE PAINT SYSTEM STUDIED ACTS AS A PROTECTIVE SCREEN VIS A VIS THE AGGRESSIVE AGENTS WITHOUT MODIFYING THEIR CHARACTERISTICS AND THE INTRINSIC ELECTROCHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF THE METAL.
