STUDY OF MORTAR CONTAINING GRAVEL STABILIZED WITH HYDRAULIC AND MIXED BINDERS WITH A VIEW TO REDUCING SHRINKAGE CRACKING

ETUDE DES MORTIERS DES GRAVES TRAITEES AUX LIANTS HYDRAULIQUES ET AUX LIANTS MIXTES EN VUE DE LA REDUCTION DE LEUR FISSURATION DE RETRAIT

A STUDY IS DESCRIBED OF FACTORS INFLUENCING THERMAL SHRINKAGE CRACKS OF ROADBASE MATERIALS STABILIZED WITH HYDRAULIC BINDERS: RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES BY MEANS OF CREEP AND COMPLEX MODULUS TESTS; DETERMINATION OF TENSILE AND FLEXURAL FAILURE; DETERMINATION OF SHRINKAGE BY MEASUREMENT OF THERMAL AND HYDRAULIC SHRINKAGE. A MODEL WAS USED FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION INTO CRACK CHARACTERISTICS (LOWERING OF TEMPERATURE RESULTING IN CRACKING, SPACING AND WIDTH OF CRACKS). CALCULATED VALUES WERE COMPARED TO EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENTS OBTAINED DURING A THERMAL SHRINKAGE FISSURATION TEST WHEN TEMPERATURE WAS LOWERED SUFFICIENTLY TO INDUCE THE FORMATION OF CRACKS. THE TESTS WERE CONDUCTED ON: (1) TWO MATERIALS STABILIZED WITH HYDRAULIC BINDERS (CEMENT AND GRANULATED BLAST FURNACE SLAG) (2) TWO MATERIALS WITH THE SAME BINDERS AND THE ADDITION OF BITUMINOUS EMULSION; (3) SAME MATERIAL STABILIZED WITH CEMENT AND WITH THE ADDITION OF EPOXY RESIN, AND PITCH-EPOXY RESIN.
