INTERPRETATION OF THE EFFICIENCY OF VIBRATING COMPACTORS

INTERPRETATION DE L'EFFICACITE DES COMPACTEURS VIBRANTS

THE AUTHOR STUDIES THE TOTAL FORCE APPLIED BY THE VIBRATING ROLLER TO THE SURFACE OF THE SOIL TO BE COMPACTED AND THE ROLLER/SOIL SYSTEM. THE NOTION OF "VIBROGENEOUS" FORCE IS INTRODUCED: IT IS THE ADDITIONAL FORCE APPLIED TO THE SOIL IN RELATION TO THE STATIC FORCE OF THE ROLLER; THIS ADDITIONAL FORCE ORIGINATES FROM THE VIBRATION (NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH CENTRIFUGAL AND INERTIA FORCES). ONE- AND TWO-DEGREE-OF-FREEDOM MATHEMATICAL MODELS WHICH REPRESENT THE VIBRATING MASS AND THE SUSPENDED MASS OF THE COMPACTOR, ARE USED FOR THE CALCULATIONS. THE SEPARATION OF THE ROLLER FROM THE SOIL IS ENVISAGED AS THE CANCELLATION OF THE TOTAL FORCE APPLIED. SOME THEORETICAL RESULTS ARE COMPARED WITH EXPERIMENTAL FINDINGS. THE RESULTS USED ARE THE MEASUREMENTS OF STRESSES IN THE ROLLER OF A VIBRATING COMPACTOR AND OF THE PRESSURE IN THE MATERIAL COMPACTED AT DIFFERENT DEPTHS.
