MOVEMENTS OF WATER IN FINE COMPACTED SOIL, ACTION OF A WATER REPELLANT AGENT

MOUVEMENT DE L'EAU DANS LES SOLS FINS COMPACTES, ACTION D'UN PRODUIT HYDROPHOBANT

FOLLOWING THE DEFINITION OF PORE WATER POTENTIAL AND A DESCRIPTION OF WATER MOVEMENT EQUATIONS, A STUDY IS PRESENTED OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF FLOW. THE CASE OF HORIZONTAL FLOW IS FIRST EXAMINED. THE INFLUENCE OF THE WATER HEAD IS DEMONSTRATED, AND ITS EQUIVALENCE TO A GIVEN SUCTION FORCE IS SHOWN. AN EFFICIENCY CRITERION FOR A WATER REPELLENT IS PROPOSED. THE EFFECTS OF THE MOISTURE CONTENT AND DENSITY ARE DEFINED. THE CASE OF VERTICAL SEEPAGE IS CONSIDERED, AND DIFFERENT SEEPAGE CONDITIONS ARE INVESTIGATED. AN ANALYSIS IS CONDUCTED OF CAPILLARY RISE, AND THE INFLUENCE OF THE VARYING DISTRIBUTION OF THE WATER REPELLENT ON THE CAPILLARY RISE IS EXAMINED. DATA ON DRYING WITHOUT A WATER TABLE ARE APPENDED.
