TESTS ON PILES SEALED BY MEANS OF INJECTION UNDER PRESSURE

ESSAIS DE PIEUX SCELLES PAR INJECTION SOUS PRESSION

FULL-SCALE TESTS ON STEEL PILES 500 MM IN DIAMETER CARRIED OUT IN DUNKERQUE HAVE SHOWN THAT INJECTION UNDER PRESSURE ALONG THE SHAFT OF A PILE LED TO VERY HIGH BEARING CAPACITY, TWO OR THREE TIMES HIGHER THAN THAT OF A CONVENTIONAL PILE. THIS INCREASE HAS MANY ADVANTAGES AS REGARDS DRILLING OPERATIONS. LOADING, PULL-OUT AND FATIGUE TESTS HAVE SHOWN THAT THE CAPACITY OF PILES CHANGED, FOLLOWING A SIMPLE LAW, ACCORDING TO THE QUANTITY OF CEMENT INJECTED AS LONG AS THE INJECTION IS CARRIED OUT VERY CAREFULLY. THIS PROCEDURE FACILITATES THE FORMATION OF A SEALING BULB BUILT METRE BY METRE ROUND THE SHAFT OF THE PILE AND CLOSELY BONDED TO THE SUBGRADE. THIS EXPLAINS THE HIGH BEARING CAPACITY OBTAINED IN FINE SAND AND IN FLANDERS CLAY.
