STUDIES OF THE FATIGUE OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES AT THE LCPC

LES ETUDES DE FATIGUE DES ENROBES BITUMINEUX AU LCPC

THIS ARTICLE SUMMARIZES THE VARIOUS STAGES OF FATIGUE TESTS CARRIED OUT AT THE LCPC WITH TRAPEZOIDAL CANTILEVERED SPECIMENS SUBJECTED TO SINUSOIDAL FLEXURAL STRESSES. ELECTRO-DYNAMIC FATIGUE CHAINS WERE USED TO ACQUIRE SOME BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF FATIGUE PHENOMENA BY APPLYING DIFFERENT STRESS TECHNIQUES TO STUDY THE INFLUENCE OF THE TEMPERATURE AND TIME BETWEEN APPLICATIONS. AFTER THOSE PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATIONS AND ACCORDING TO PAVEMENT DESIGN NEEDS, A CONTROLLED STRAIN TEST PROCEDURE GIVING A LIFE TIME BETWEEN 10000 AND 10000000 CYCLES WAS SELECTED. THIS TEST PROCEDURE WAS UTILIZED TO CHECK THE FATIGUE BEHAVIOUR OF GRAVEL-BITUMEN MIXTURES AND BITUMINOUS MIXTURES CONTAINING SPECIAL BINDERS. AN EXPERIMENTAL ROAD SECTION WAS STUDIED AND OBSERVED IN MARSEILLE. AT THE SAME TIME, A MULTIPLE FATIGUE MACHINE WAS DEVELOPED TO TEST 12 SAMPLES SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH A VIEW TO ESTABLISHING MIX DESIGN FORMULAE. ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE NEED OF CONDUCTING FATIGUE TESTS UNDER CONDITIONS AS NEAR AS POSSIBLE TO REAL PAVEMENT CONDITIONS.
