THE FAILURE OF UNI-DIRECTIONAL COMPOSITE MATERIALS IN THE PRESENCE OF STRESS CONCENTRATORS

THE POSSIBILITY IS STUDIED OF DETERMINING ANALYTICALLY THE INITIAL POINT OF CUTTING AND IT IS SHOWN THAT FOR UNI-DIRECTIONAL MATERIALS WHICH ARE STRONGLY ANISOTROPIC, AND WHICH ARE SUBJECTED TO TENSION PARALLEL TO THE FIBRES, IT IS POSSIBLE TO CONSIDER WITH SUFFICIENT ACCURACY THAT THERE IS A SPLITTING IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD OF STRESS CONCENTRATION AT THE INSTANT WHEN THE TANGENTIAL LONGITUDINAL FORCES REACH THE SHEAR STRENGTH OF THE MATERIAL. WHEN A SPECIMEN OF PLASTIC REINFORCED WITH UNI-DIRECTIONAL GLASS FIBRES OR OF PLASTIC REINFORCED WITH CARBON FILAMENTS, WITH AN OPENING OR A LATERAL THROAT, IS SUBJECTED TO TENSION PARALLEL TO THE FIBRES, A LONGITUDINAL SPLITTING OF THE MATERIAL OCCURS. THE DISTRIBUTION OF STRESSES IN A WEAKENED SECTION AND THE COEFFICIENT OF STRESS CONCENTRATION IN A PLATE OF PLASTIC MATERIAL REINFORCED WITH FIBRES, HAVING A CENTRAL CIRCULAR OPENING HAVE BEEN STUDIED. STRESS DISTRIBUTION WAS ANALYZED ROUND THE CONTOUR OF AN OPENING, ASSUMING THAT THE FAILURE OF THE MATERIAL COMMENCED AT A POINT IN THE CONTOUR WHERE THE NORMAL CIRCULAR STRESSES REACH, FOR THE FIRST TIME, THE STRENGTH OF THE MATERIAL IN TENSION AT A GIVEN ANGLE WITH RESPECT TO THE DIRECTION OF THE REINFORCEMENT.
