THE KREEKRAKDAM BRIDGES ON THE NEW SCHELDT-RHINE CANAL (NETHERLANDS)

THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES TWO HIGHWAY BRIDGES COMPOSED OF THREE SPANS: THE PIERS ARE FOUNDED ON STEEL PILES FILLED WITH CONCRETE AND SUPPORTING A RECTANGULAR FOOTING SURMOUNTED BY TWO MASSIVE COLUMNS IN THE FORM OF A PYRAMID. THE ABUTMENTS REST ON FIVE STEEL SHEET PILE WALLS. THEY COMPRISE A SLAB WITH A SLOPING FACE INCLINED AT 1/2 AND A RETAINING WALL WITH TWO WING WALLS. THE DECK IS COMPOSED OF A STANDARD ORTHOTROPIC STEEL PLATE WITH STIFFENERS IN THE FORM OF TROUGHS RESTING ON TWO SOLID-WEB GIRDERS OF WELDED PLATE BY MEANS OF VERTICAL PLATES FOLLOWING THE CONTOURS OF THE STIFFENERS; VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL STIFFENERS ARE WELDED ON ONE OF THE FACES OF THE WEBS OF EACH BEAM. TESTS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT IN REGARD TO THE ALTERNATE HORIZONTAL DISPLACEMENTS BETWEEN THE ORTHOTROPIC PLATE AND THE UPPER FLANGES OF THE TRANSVERSE BEAMS, THE BEARING CAPACITY OF THE PLATES BETWEEN THE STIFFENERS AND TRANSVERSE BEAMS, THE REINFORCEMENT OF THE FOOTINGS OF THE MAIN BEAMS (FATIGUE TESTS). THE ARTICLE CONCLUDES WITH SOME INFORMATION CONCERNING THE ERECTION, PAINTING, BEARING DEVICES AND THE BRIDGE DECK SURFACING.
