TESTS ON CEMENT AND CONCRETE CRACKING

LES ESSAIS DE FISSURATION DU CIMENT ET DU BETON.

FOR MORE THAN TWENTY YEARS, TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT IN FRANCE ON THE CRACKING OF CONCRETE BY MEANS OF CHECKING THE FISSURATION BEHAVIOUR OF A RING OF PURE PASTE. THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES THIS TEST AND COMMENTS ON THE RESULTS: THE TEST DEPENDS ON THE TEST PROCEDURES, IN PARTICULAR ON THE DEGREE OF MOISTURE ROUND THE RING; THE RESULTS ARE VERY DISPERSED AND HARDLY REPRODUCIBLE; HITHERTO IT HAS NOT BEEN POSSIBLE TO ESTABLISH AN EXACT CORRELATION BETWEEN THE TIME OF CRACKING OF A RING OF PURE PASTE AND THE CRACKS OBSERVED ON STRUCTURES. IT IS, THEREFORE, NECESSARY TO HAVE A BETTER APPRECIATION OF THE DIFFERENT PARAMETERS WHICH INFLUENCE THIS PHENOMENON. THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES OTHER LABORATORY TESTS UNDERTAKEN WITH THE FOLLOWING AIM: 1) TESTS ON FRESH CONCRETE SLABS PLACED IN A TUNNEL WHERE A CURRENT OF AIR IS CIRCULATED WITH GIVEN MOISTURE AND TEMPERATURE CONDITIONS AND WHERE NOTE IS TAKEN OF THE TIME OF APPEARANCE OF THE CRACKS, THEIR NUMBER AND SPACING, BENDING TESTS ON SLABS OF FRESH CONCRETE WITH INDICATIONS OF THE EVOLUTION IN DEFLECTIONS AND TENSILE STRENGTH WITH TIME; 2) MEASUREMENT OF THE TENSILE DEFORMATION PROPERTY OF A RING OF MORTAR UP TO FAILURE.
