OPTIMUM PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION OF MORTARS AND CONCRETES CONTAINING SYNTHETIC RESIN

CONCRETES AND MORTARS WITH A SINGLE THERMOSETTING RESIN BINDER POSSESS VERY INTERESTING PROPERTIES, IN PARTICULAR VERY HIGH MECHANICAL STRENGTHS, 340 BARS APPROXIMATELY IN TENSION AND 1400 BARS IN COMPRESSION. BECAUSE OF THE HIGH COST OF THESE NEW BINDERS, THEIR APPLICATION IS STILL VERY LIMITED. THE RESEARCH PROGRAMME REPORTED HERE INVESTIGATES NEW RESIN-CONCRETES OR MORTARS, WITH THE AIM OF REDUCING THE PROPORTION OF BINDER NECESSARY TO A MINIMUM. INFORMATION WAS OBTAINED ON THE ROLES PLAYED BY THE PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION AND THE NATURE OF THE MATERIALS AND BY THE PLACING METHODS. THUS, FOR LOW PROPORTIONS OF RESIN (5% TO 6% INSTEAD OF 8% TO 9% NORMALLY USED), MORTARS WERE OBTAINED WITH TENSILE STRENGTH HIGHER THAN 220 BARS AND COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH HIGHER THAN 900 BARS. FURTHERMORE, IN THE CASE OF CONCRETES A COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF 1230 BARS WAS OBTAINED WITH A PROPORTION OF RESIN OF ONLY 7%.
