PROPERTIES OF LIMESTONE

PROPRIETES DES CALCAIRES.

PAPER PRESENTED TO THE SECOND INTERNATIONAL ENGINEERING GEOLOGY CONGRESS, SAO PAULO, AUGUST 1974. A GEOLOGICAL STUDY OF NUMEROUS LIMESTONES AND THE STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF A LARGE NUMBER OF TESTS HAVE SHOWN THE INFLUENCE OF PETROGRAPHY ON SEVERAL PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES AND THE RELATIONS WHICH COULD EXIST BETWEEN THESE PROPERTIES. THE LARGE DIVERSITY OF LIMESTONE IN FRANCE HAS ALLOWED CORRELATIONS TO BE ESTABLISHED BETWEEN A CERTAIN NUMBER OF PROPERTIES. THE ESSENTIAL FACTOR CONDITIONING ALL OTHER CHARACTERISTICS IS POROSITY. THREE FAMILIES OF PROPERTIES EXIST WITHIN WHICH THE RELATIONS ARE LINEAR AND SUFFICIENTLY GOOD: (1) - POROSITY, WAVE PROPAGATION VELOCITY, MODULUS OF DEFORMATION;(2) - COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH, TENSILE STRENGTH, HARDNESS; (3) - DRILLING HARDNESS, RESISTANCE TO WEAR AND TO FRAGMENTATION. THE INFLUENCE OF MINERALOGY, STRUCTURE AND MOISTURE CONTENT IS DISCUSSED WITH RESPECT TO ALL THESE PROPERTIES.
