POLYMERS AND COPOLYMERS CONTAINING MODIFIED EPOXY RESIN - RELATION WITH BITUMEN FOR ROADS

OXYALKALIZATION OF NORMAL EPOXY RESINS (OF THE BIPHENOL A DIGLICIDILETHER TYPE) BY MONOALCOHOLS ALLOWS DIFFERENT FAMILIES OF EPOXY RESINS TO BE OBTAINED WHICH ARE DISTINGUISHED FROM BASIC RESINS BY HIGHER HYDROXYL INDICES AND LOWER EPOXY INDICES. THE PRESENCE OF HYDROXYL GROUPS IN QUANTITIES GREATER THAN THOSE OF THE BASIC RESINS ALLOWS COPOLYMERS TO BE PREPARED BY CONDENSATION FROM RESINS SUCH AS SILICONES; SUCH MODIFIED SILICONE EPOXY RESINS CAN BE RETICULATED THROUGH THEIR OXYRANE CYCLES. OTHER COPOLYMERS, SUCH AS EPOXY-POLYURETHANES ARE EASILY OBTAINED BY POLYADDITION, RETICULATING THE NEW EPOXY BASES WITH POLYISOCYANATES. THESE PRODUCTS HAVE THE ADVANTAGE OVER STANDARD EPOXIES OF BEING MORE ELASTIC AND ABLE TO HARDEN AT TEMPERATURES BELOW 10 DEG CELSIUS. THE PRESENCE OF A HYDROCARBON CHAIN ON THE MOLECULES OF THESE NEW RESINS ALLOWS A RANGE OF EPOXIES OF VARIABLE ELASTICITY AND ALSO BITUMEN EPOXIES AND BITUMEN/EPOXY-POLYURETHANES TO BE OBTAINED WHICH ARE PERFECTLY STABLE AND OF SIMPLE COMPOSITION. THE ADHESION OF THESE DIFFERENT PRODUCTS ON DRY AND WET CONCRETE IS SATISFACTORY.
