STRENGTHENING OF THE MONTMERLE-SUR-SAONE SUSPENSION BRIDGE

RENFORCEMENT DU PONT SUSPENDU DE MONTMERLE-SUR-SAONE.

THE DECK OF THE MONTMERLE-SUR-SAONE SUSPENSION BRIDGE IS AN EXPERIMENTAL DECK USING LIGHT ALUMINIUM ALLOYS AND A SURFACING CONSISTING OF GLUED SLABS. INITIALLY IT WOULD APPEAR THAT SUCH A STRUCTURE IS A POSSIBLE SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEMS OF MAINTENANCE, STRENGTHENING OR RESTORATION OF SUSPENSION BRIDGES. THE USE OF ALUMINIUM ALLOY HAS FACILITATED EASY ERECTION (WITH THE AID OF A GMC TYPE 4 T LORRY EQUIPPED WITH A TWO-TON CRANE), AND IT HAS RESULTED IN A SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN THE WEIGHT OF THE STRUCTURE: 91 T, AS THE DECK WEIGHS ONLY 68 T INSTEAD OF 159 T FOR THE STEEL-TIMBER DECK. THE STRESSES IN THE CABLES AMOUNT TO 41 H BARS INSTEAD OF 32 H BARS, WHICH IS OF CONSIDERABLE IMPORTANCE FOR THE SAFETY OF THE STRUCTURE AS THE CABLES HAVE NOT BEEN CHANGED. THE CHOICE OF PAVEMENT HAS BEEN INFLUENCED BY THE NEED TO HAVE A LIGHT RESISTANT PAVEMENT WHICH REQUIRES LITTLE MAINTENANCE, THUS SMALL SLABS OF PLASTIC, PREFABRICATED IN A FACTORY WERE CHOSEN AND GLUED DIRECTLY TO THE LIGHT ALUMINIUM ALLOY PLATES. COMPOSED BASICALLY OF POLYVINYL CHLORIDE (CORINDON), THEY HAVE ONE SMOOTH SIDE FOR GLUEING TO THE ALUMINIUM PLATES AND A SIDE COMPOSED OF SECTIONS OF A PYRAMID SERVING AS WEARING COURSE. THE SLABS USED, MEASURING 0.6 M SQUARE, HAVE A MAXIMUM THICKNESS OF 7 MM, REDUCING TO 3 MM BETWEEN THE FRUSTRUM OF THE PYRAMIDS AND WEIGHING 2.65 KM EACH, OR 7.36 KG/SQ M. THE STRUCTURE WILL BE SUBJECTED TO VERY DETAILED SURVEILLANCE IN ORDER TO EXAMINE THE BEHAVIOUR OVER TIME: ONLY AN EXAMINATION YEAR AFTER YEAR WILL ALLOW DEFINITIVE CONCLUSIONS TO BE ESTABLISHED REGARDING THE EXPERIMENTAL DECK.
