APPARENT THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF STABILIZED ROADBASE MATERIALS

CONDUCTIVITE THERMIQUE APPARENTE DES MATERIAUX D'ASSISES TRAITEES.

THE AIM OF THIS STUDY WAS THE DETERMINATION OF THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF STABILIZED ROADBASE MATERIALS AND THE INFLUENCE ON THIS CONDUCTIVITY OF DIFFERENT PARAMETERS: TYPE OF AGGREGATE, BINDER, TEMPERATURE, DENSITY, MOISTURE CONTENT ETC. AFTER BRIEFLY REVIEWING THE DIFFERENT METHODS USED, BOTH UNDER PERMANENT AND TRANSIENT CONDITIONS, THE AUTHORS DESCRIBE THE APPARATUS USED: THE METHOD OF THE CIRCULAR PLATE WITHOUT A GUARD RING. THE REASONS FOR THIS CHOICE ARE BOTH PRACTICAL (SAMPLING BY CORE DRILLING) AND ECONOMICAL (LOW COST PRICE OF SIMPLIFIED APPARATUS). FOUR TYPES OF MATERIALS ARE INVOLVED IN THE TESTS: GRAVEL-BITUMEN, GRAVEL-SLAG WITH CRUSHED RIVER STONE BASE, GRAVEL-SLAG ALL SLAG AND GRAVEL-SLAG WITH LIMESTONE AGGREGATE. ALTHOUGH THE METHOD USED HAS ITS INCONVENIENCE, LATERAL THERMAL LOSSES, LONG DURATION OF TEST TO ATTAIN PERMANENT CONDITIONS, GOOD REPRODUCIBILITY WAS OBSERVED IN THE TESTS. ON THE OTHER HAND, THE AUTHORS HAVE DEMONSTRATED THE INCREASE IN THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY COEFFICIENT AS A FUNCTION OF THE TEMPERATURE AND THE MOISTURE CONTENT. FINALLY, THE FOUR MATERIALS STUDIED HAVE BEEN CLASSIFIED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THEIR INSULATION VALUE.
