METHOD FOR THE CALCULATION OF SWELLING - APPLICATION TO SOIL MECHANICS

METHODE DE CALCUL DE LA DILATANCE - APPLICATION A LA MECANIQUE DES SOLS.

FROM THE MECHANICAL POINT OF VIEW, THE VARIATIONS IN VOLUME PRODUCED BY SWELLING ARE DUE TO SHEAR, THAT IS TO SAY THEY DEPEND ON THE STRESS DEVIATOR. THE SWELLING IS EVIDENT FROM THE BEGINNING OF SHEAR, DURING THE ASSUMED ELASTIC PHASE. IN SOIL MECHANICS ONE GENERALLY INVESTIGATES IT ON THE BASIS OF A LINEAR MODEL OF ELASTICITY. THE VOLUMETRIC DEFORMATIONS THEN ONLY OCCUR AS A VARIATION OF THE ISOTROPIC STRESS. IT IS, THEREFORE, DESIRABLE TO INTRODUCE THE SWELLING FROM THE BEGINNING OF LOADING, IN THE FORM OF A VARIATION IN THE ADDITIONAL VOLUME DUE TO THE DEVIATOR. FOR THE SOLUTION OF THREE DIMENSIONAL PROBLEMS THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD HAS BEEN USED; THE SWELLING IS INTRODUCED BY VARYING THE LINEAR ELASTIC SOLUTION, THIS NECESSITATES DATA ON THE ELASTIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SOIL. (YOUNG'S MODULUS AND POISSON'S RATIO) AND SWELLING CHARACTERISTICS. IT IS CONFIRMED THAT THE INTRODUCTION OF SWELLING INTO SOIL BEHAVIOUR CAN CONSIDERABLY MODIFY THE STRESS FIELDS AND THE DISPLACEMENT WITH RESPECT TO CLASSICAL ELASTICITY SOLUTIONS. ON THE OTHER HAND, IF ONE DOES NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE PLASTIC BEHAVIOUR, THE CALCULATION BY THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD REMAINS RELATIVELY INEXPENSIVE. THIS METHOD IS GENERAL AND HAS BEEN INTRODUCED IN A SYSTEMATIC MANNER IN THE FINITE ELEMENT PROGRAM "ROSALIE" OF THE LCPC.
