WHEN PLACED AS FILL CHALK APPEARS AS A GRANULAR MATERIAL OF LOW DENSITY WITH A LARGE PROPORTION OF CHALK BLOCKS WITH HIGH POROSITY. THESE MOIST BLOCKS HAVE A LOW COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH; THEY ARE CRUSHED UNDER THE SELF WEIGHT OF THE FILL WHICH LEADS TO A FINE MATERIAL BEING OBTAINED (MODIFICATION TO THE PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION) AND ALSO TO AN INCREASE IN DENSITY LEADING TO A PRESSURISATION OF THE INTERSTITIAL WATER LIBERATED BY THE CRUSHING OF THE BLOCKS. THIS VARIATION IN STATE COULD EXPLAIN HOW THE MATERIAL BECOMES LESS AND LESS COMPRESSIBLE. IN ORDER TO BETTER SHOW THE REALITY OF SUCH VARIATION, THE AUTHORS HAVE CARRIED OUT TWO TYPES OF TEST: THE FIRST MEASURES LATERAL STRESS ON A CYLINDER FOR WHICH THE LATERAL DEFORMATION IS NIL. THE SECOND MEASURES THE LATERAL DEFORMATION OF A CYLINDER WITH A CONSTANT LATERAL STRESS. THE SECOND METHOD ONLY (CONTROLLED LATERAL STRESS) ALLOWS CERTAIN ASPECTS OF THE RHEOLOGY OF THE COMPACTED CLAY TO BE DIRECTLY OBTAINED, SINCE IT IS NOT NECESSARY, AS IN THE FIRST METHOD, TO MAKE PARTICULAR HYPOTHESES SUCH AS ELASTICITY FOR ITS INTERPRETATION: THESE EXPERIMENTS SHOULD BE FOLLOWED BY THE INTERPRETATION BY MEANS OF FINITE ELEMENT METHODS.
