THE USE OF GREEN ROMAINVILLE CLAY STABILIZED WITH QUICKLIME AND WITH CEMENT FOR IMPROVED SUB-GRADES

UTILISATION EN COUCHE DE FORME DES ARGILES VERTES DE ROMAINVILLE TRAITEES A LA CHAUX ET AU CIMENT.

THE AUTHORS DESCRIBE AN EXPERIMENT IN THE USE OF GREEN ROMAINVILLE CLAY STABILIZED WITH BINDERS FOR AN IMPROVED SUBGRADE; THIS SOIL IS USUALLY EXCAVATED TO TIP AND IS ENCOUNTERED IN MANY LOCAL HIGHWAY PROJECTS. LABORATORY STUDY AND EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATIONS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT ON THE SITE AT THE MAIN NORTHERN ROUTE FROM THE NEW TOWN OF MARNE-LA-VALLEE. SIMPLE STABILIZATION WITH QUICKLIME AND WITH MIXTURES OF LIME AND CEMENT WAS FIRST CARRIED OUT BEFORE DETERMINING THE DOSAGE OF BINDER TO BE PROPOSED FOR THE USE ENVISAGED, (CBR AT LEAST 25% AFTER FOUR DAYS IMMERSION) DEPENDING ON THE SITE CONDITIONS. IN THE COURSE OF THESE TESTS, PARTICULAR ATTENTION WAS PAID TO THE LITTLE KNOWN PROBLEM OF THE MIXING OF SOIL WHICH IS PLASTIC AND HAS HARDLY ANY CONSISTENCY. THE RESULTS OBTAINED WERE SUFFICIENTLY FAVOURABLE TO ENABLE HEAVY SITE TRAFFIC TO TRAVEL ON THE IMPROVED SUB-GRADE THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER OF 1973, IN SPITE OF THE THUNDER-STORMS WHICH WOULD NORMALLY MAKE THIS TYPE OF UNTREATED SOIL, IMPASSABLE. IT WAS INTENDED TO EMPHASIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF PROCEEDING WITH THE PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION AFTER STABILIZATION OF THE SUB-GRADE BEFORE THE END OF THE GOOD WEATHER. THIS WAS NOT, UNFORTUNATELY, POSSIBLE ON THIS SITE. THE EXPERIENCE OF THIS TYPE OF CONSTRUCTION IS, THEREFORE, ONLY PARTIAL AND A MORE COMPLETE STUDY SHOULD BE CARRIED OUT ON ANOTHER SITE.
