ACCIDENT ANALYSIS ON MOTORWAYS CONSIDERING DRIVER AND VEHICLE CHARACTERISTICS AND SUPERVISION. FINAL REPORT (ABRIDGED VERSION)

THE OBJECT OF THE RESEARCH WAS TO MAKE ANALYSES AND COMPARISONS POSSIBLE OF TRAFFIC OFFENCES AND ACCIDENTS ON MOTORWAYS. OVER A 1 1/2 YEAR PERIOD DATA WERE COLLECTED FROM ALL ACCIDENTS AND TRAFFIC OFFENCES WHICH OCCURRED IN THE SALZBURG WEST - AND TAUERN AUTOBAHN AREAS. THE OVERALL ACCIDENT FREQUENCY RATE AND SERIOUSNESS OF ACCIDENTS APPEAR TO BE CONSIDERABLY GREATER ON THE WEST MOTORWAY THAN ON THE TAUERN MOTORWAY. THE MORE DANGEROUS WEST MOTORWAY IS ON THE OTHER HAND SUPERVISED LESS, WHEN MEASURED AGAINST THE NUMBER OF POLICE CHARGES PER KILOMETRE. ON BOTH MOTORWAYS THERE WERE SECTIONS WHICH, DUE TO CONSTRUCTION OR TRAFFIC IMPROVEMENT WORKS, LED TO AN INCREASE IN THE ACCIDENT RATE. ESPECIALLY AFFECTED WERE THOSE AREAS AROUND SLIP ROADS LEADING ONTO AND OFF THE MOTORWAY. WHEN CONSIDERING THE RECORDED TYPES OF ACCIDENT, DEVIATING FROM THE CARRIAGEWAY WAS MOST COMMON, FOLLOWED BY "REAR-END COLLISIONS" AND "SLIDING AND SKIDDING." MORE THAN HALF OF ALL ACCIDENTS OCCURRED WHEN THE CONDITION OF THE ROAD WAS FAULTY. DRIVERS INVOLVED IN ACCIDENTS COULD BE PUT INTO RISK GROUPS IN WHICH LACK OF DRIVING EXPERIENCE STANDS OUT ABOVE ANYTHING ELSE. WHEN CONSIDERING TRAFFIC SUPERVISION IT WAS ESTABLISHED THAT SUPERVISION CONCENTRATION AREAS DO NOT ALWAYS CORRESPOND WITH ACCIDENT CONCENTRATION AREAS AND ALSO THE CHARACTERISTIC ACCIDENT GROUPS AND OFFENCES LEADING TO ACCIDENTS ARE NOT ALWAYS COMPREHENDED.
