THE IMPORTANCE OF EMERGENCY MEDICAL ATTENTION FOR THE PROGNOSIS OF SEVERELY INJURED PEOPLE. A STUDY OF FATAL ACCIDENTS

DIE BEDEUTUNG DER NOTARZTVERSORGUNG FUER DIE PROGNOSE BEI SCHWERVERLETZTEN. EINE UNTERSUCHUNG VON UNFAELLEN MIT TOEDLICHEM AUSGANG

THIS IS A REPORT ON THE FINDINGS OF CATAMNESIS, LEGAL AND CLINICAL TESTS ON 91 ACCIDENT FATALITIES IN THE YEAR 1976, IN CASES WHERE EMERGENCY MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS AVAILABLE. DEFECTS IN SHOCK THERAPY AND IN ARTIFICIAL RESPIRATION CAN AFFECT ONE'S CHANCES OF LIVING. IN NO CASE, HOWEVER, WAS A FAILURE OR BREAKDOWN OF THE TECHNICAL EQUIPMENT IDENTIFIED. NEITHER WAS THERE ANY SIGNIFICANT DEGREE OF PROBABILITY OF A CAUSAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DEATH OF THE PATIENT AND A DEFECT IN THE EMERGENCY MEDICAL ATTENTION, WHICH WOULD GIVE GROUNDS FOR CIVIL OR CRIMINAL LEGAL ACTION.
