THE INFLUENCE OF DRUGS ON DRIVING ABILITY

BEEINFLUSSUNG DER VERKEHRSTUECHTIGKEIT DURCH PHARMAKA

IN THE PAST DECADE THE PROPORTIONS OF REGISTERED ROAD VEHICLES AND DRUGS HAVE INCREASED SIMILARLY BY ABOUT TWO TO THREE TIMES. THEREFORE THE INFLUENCE ON DRIVING ABILITY OF DRUGS WHICH AFFECT THE FUNCTIONING OF THE BRAIN, PSYCHOPHYSICAL ABILITY, MEMORY CAPACITY AND ASPECTS OF CHARACTER, HAS MORE IMPORTANCE THAN EVERY BEFORE. TEN DRUG GROUPS (NARCOTICS, HYPNOTICS AND SEDATIVES, ANALGETICS, PSYCHOPHARMA-CEUTICS, MYDRIATICS, ANTIHISTAMINES, ANTICONVULSIVES, ANTIHYPNOTICS, PSYCHOSTIMULANTS AND APPETITE REDUCERS, CORTICOSTEROIDS) STAND OUT FOR THEIR STIMULATING OR DEPRESSING EFFECTS ON THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM. THE SEPARATE SUBSTANCE GROUPS ARE INDIVIDUALLY DISCUSSED WITH RESPECT TO THEIR CENTRAL EFFECTS AND THEIR CLINICALLY PROVEN LIMITATIONS ON DRIVING ABILITY. CONCLUSIONS ARE DRAWN REGARDING THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PHYSICIAN, OF PHARMACEUTICAL FIRMS, OF CHEMISTS AND PATIENTS WITH RESPECT TO THE PRESCRIBING OF DRUGS TO AND THE TAKING OF THEM BY DRIVERS.
