COLOUR BLINDNESS TO RED AND TRAFFIC

THE EXPECTED WEAKNESSES IN TRAFFIC OF COLOUR BLIND PEOPLE - DELAYED RECOGNITION, CONFUSION OF COLOURED SIGNALS, LACK OF RECOGNITION OF RED SIGNALS, ARISING FROM PROTANOPIA (GRAMBERG-DANIELSEN) ARE CONSTANTLY CONFIRMED IN CLINICAL AND LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS. PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE APPEARS TO GIVE A CONTRARY IMPRESSION, AS FEW ACCIDENTS ARE KNOWN, IN WHICH THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT WAS COLOUR BLINDNESS. ACCIDENT STATISTICS ALSO GIVE NO INDICATION OF INCREASED ACCIDENT PRONENESS FOR COLOUR BLIND PEOPLE. ON THE BASES OF THE PUBLISHED LITERATURE TO DATE, THE GENERAL OPINION REGARDING THE ROLE OF COLOUR BLINDNESS TO RED IN TRAFFIC IS EXPLAINED. FURTHERMORE, AN INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH PROJECT IS PROPOSED, WITH THE AIM OF CLARIFYING THESE QUESTIONS.
