THE EFFICIENCY OF THE OLDER DRIVER IN ROAD TRAFFIC

DIE LEISTUNGSFAEHIGKEIT DES ALTERNDEN MENSCHEN IM STRASSENVERKEHR

THE REPORT DEALS WITH MEDICAL EXPERIENCES IN ASSESSING DRIVER APTITUDE AND DRIVING EFFICIENCY WITH REFERENCE TO THE IMPAIRMENT OF CAPABILITIES DUE TO AGE. DURING TESTS OF DRIVER APTITUDE USING PSYCHO-MEDICAL TECHNIQUES PERFORMANCE DEFECTS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE EFFICIENCY OF DRIVERS MAY BE UNCOVERED. ASSESSMENT OF SUITABILITY FOLLOWING PERFORMANCE FAILURE IN FORENSIC PRACTICE IS MORE DIFFICULT. COMPLEX INDIVIDUAL AND ECOLOGICAL FACTORS MUST BE REGARDED AS PREREQUISITE CONDITIONS FOR EFFICIENCY WHICH REDUCE THE MATERIAL PSYCHOLOGICAL PERFORMANCE OF OLDER PERSONS. DIFFICULTIES IN ADAPTATION AND REDUCTIONS IN EFFICIENCY DUE TO AGE CANNOT BE COMPLETELY COMPENSATED BY THE ADVANTAGES OF LONG YEARS OF EXPERIENCE OF ROAD TRAFFIC. AMONG SOME OTHER ECOLOGICAL FACTORS ONE MUST CONSIDER ESPECIALLY AILMENTS, ALCOHOL AND MEDICAMENTS, WHICH LIMIT THE EFFICIENCY OF THE OLDER PERSON IN ROAD TRAFFIC. REFERENCE IS MADE TO MEDICAL AND GERIATRIC PREVENTIVE MEASURES.
