EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES FOR CRASH BARRIERS ON NARROW MEDIANS

AS THE PERCENTAGE OF TRUCKS IS HIGHER ON JAPANESE HIGHWAYS THAN ON THOSE OF OTHER COUNTRIES---41% ON THE TOMEI EXPRESSWAY IN 1970---MEDIAN BARRIERS MUST BE DESIGNED TO HIGHER CRITERIA THAN ARE BARRIERS SERVING PREDOMINANTLY AUTO-ORIENTED FACILITIES. COLLISION TESTS WERE CONDUCTED WITH THREE TYPES OF BARRIERS---BLOCKED-OUT MEDIAN GUARDRAILS, BOX-BEAM MEDIAN BARRIERS, AND BLOCKED-OUT CABLE MEDIAN BARRIERS---TO ASSESS THEIR EFFECTIVENESS FOR TRUCKS AND CARSIMPACTED AT 46 AND 80 KM/HR, RESPECTIVELY, AND AN ANGLE OF INCIDENCE OF 20 DEG. POSTS AND BEAMS WERE STRENGTHENED IN ALL TESTS BEYOUND THE LEVELS NORMALLY USED IN GERMANY AND THE UNITED STATES. BARRIER GEOMETRIES AND TEST RESULTS ARE REPORTED.
