THE KINEMATICS OF THE CERVICAL VERTEBRAE OF A STRAPPED-IN OCCUPANT IN FRONTAL IMPACT

THE KINEMATICS OF THE CERVICAL VERTEBRAE WERE EXAMINED IN 6 SIMULATED FRONTAL COLLISIONS (3 PAIRS OF TESTS) WITH STRAPPED-IN CADAVERS. THE SPEEDS WERE 30, 40 AND 50 KM/H RESPECTIVELY, AND THE MEAN DECELERATION OF THE SLED VARIED BETWEEN 18 AND 24 G. INFORMATION CONCERNING THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE NECK DURING THE IMPACT PHASE WAS DERIVED FROM THE ANALYSIS OF HIGH SPEED FILM FROM A CAMERA PLACED AT 90 DEGREES TO THE SLED. THE MAXIMUM FORWARD MOVEMENT OF THE HEAD WAS OBSERVED TO BE BETWEEN 480 AND 590 MM. THE MAXIMUM OF THE ABSOLUTE ANGLE OF INCLINATION AT THE CERVICOTHORACIC TRANSITION WAS REACHED AT TIMES OF 100 AND 150 AND VARIED BETWEEN 75 AND 27 DEGREES. MEDICAL EXAMINATION OF THE CERVICAL VERTEBRAE SHOWED MUSCULAR BLEEDING IN THE AREA OF THE CERVICOTHORACIC TRANSITION. OTHER EFFECTS OBSERVED WERE BLEEDING INTO THE FORAMINA INTERVERTEBRALIA AND THE CERVICAL JOINTS, DAMAGED TENDONS AND INTERVERTEBRAL DISCS, ARCH FRACTURE OF THE 5 AND COMPRESSION FRACTURE OF THE 6 VERTEBRAE.
