CAUSES OF TRAFFIC COLLISIONS

URSACHEN VON VERKEHRSVERSTOESSEN

THE BEHAVIOUR OF 1309 DRIVERS WAS OBSERVED IN NORMAL TRAFFIC CONDITIONS. IN A QUESTIONNAIRE AND TEST ON GOOD AND BAD ROAD USERS THE REASONS FOR THEIR PROVEN DRIVING BEHAVIOUR WERE RESEARCHED. THE DATA WERE COMPARED IN A COMPARISON OF EXTREME GROUPS. THE RESULTS: VIOLATION OF THE ROAD SAFETY RULES OCCURRED DESPITE KNOWLEDGE OF THE DANGER. ASSESSED AS ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS IS FIRST: DISREGARD OF THE PRIORITY AND STOP SIGNS, FOLLOWED BY OVERTAKING WHEN PROHIBITED. THE CROSSING OF DEMARCATION LINES, RAPID APPROACH AND INCORRECT POSITIONING WERE SEEN AS NOT DANGEROUS (BOTH THE TEST AND THE CHECK GROUP). THE ACCIDENT ANALYSES AT THE OBSERVED TEST LOCATION SHOW 'APPROACH OF JUNCTIONS' ACCIDENTS AS THE MOST FREQUENT. TRAFFIC KNOWLEDGE WAS SIMILAR IN BOTH GROUPS. SEVERAL DIRECTION ARRANGEMENTS WERE OBSERVED EQUALLY WELL BY BOTH GROUPS (ROAD MARKINGS BEST OF ALL). INFRINGEMENTS INCREASE IN PROPORTION TO DRIVING SPEED. THE DRIVING BEHAVIOUR OF OFFENDERS CAN BE DESCRIBED AS OBJECTIVELY RISKY BUT CONTROLLED AND THAT OF NON-OFFENDERS AS OVER-ACCOMMODATING (FOR EXAMPLE FREQUENT STOPPING AT A PRIORITY SIGN). OFFENDERS MAKE FULL USE OF FAVOURABLE SITUATIONS (TRAFFIC SITUATION AND VEHICLE). THEY CHOOSE A VEHICLE WHEN BUYING WITH GOOD DRIVING CHARACTERISTICS; THEY POSSESS THEIR DRIVER'S LICENCE LONGER AND HAVE MORE DRIVING EXPERIENCE. NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES SHOWED THEMSELVES WITH RESPECT TO PERSONALITY FEATURES: EXTROVERSION-INTROVERSION AND NEUROTICSM VERSUS EMOTIONAL STABILITY, SEX AND SCHOOL EDUCATION. DIFFERENCES WERE APPARENT IN SPECIFIC ATTITUDES TO TRAFFIC AND SOCIAL-DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS SUCH AS PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS, CLASS OF VEHICLE, KNOWLEDGE OF ROAD STRETCH, DISTANCE TRAVELLED AND THE NUMBER OF OFFENCES.
