TRAFFIC LAW IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA

VERKEHRSRECHT IN DER TSCHECHOSLOWAKEI

DURING 1976 CERTAIN AMENDMENTS TO CZECHOSLOVAKIAN TRAFFIC LAWS HAVE APPEARED. THERE NOW EXISTS A COMPLETE PROHIBITION TO DRIVING A VEHICLE WHEN THE REACTION CAPACITY IS IMPAIRED, (ALCOHOL, FATIGUE, ILLNESS). THE DEMAND FOR ALCOHOL CONTROL IS BINDING. DRIVERS OF MOTOR-CYCLES MUST WEAR CRASH HELMETS. DRIVERS OF CARS OR ESTATE CARS MUST WEAR SEAT BELTS ON RURAL ROADS. WHERE MORE THAN ONE TRAFFIC LANE EXISTS IN A UNI-DIRECTIONAL CARRIAGEWAY, THE RIGHT HAND LANE SHOULD NORMALLY BE USED. THE LEFT LANE SHOULD REMAIN AVAILABLE FOR OVERTAKING. THE SPEED LIMIT IN BUILT UP AREAS IS LIMITED TO 60 KPH DURING THE PERIOD 05,00 HRS TO 23,00 HRS, THERE BEING NO LIMIT DURING THE REMAINING HOURS OF THE NIGHT. PEDESTRIANS WHO HAVE ALREADY SET FOOT ON THE CARRIAGEWAY SHOULD, ON PRINCIPLE, NOT BE ENDANGERED. ON ROADS WITH TWO-WAY TRAFFIC VEHICLES SHOULD ONLY BE STOPPED OR PARKED ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE. STOPPING OR PARKING IS FORBIDDEN ON: FOODPATHS (PAVEMENTS), RAILWAY LEVEL CROSSINGS, UNDERPASSES AND TUNNELS, AND AT A DISTANCE OF LESS THAN 25 M BEFORE AND 10 M AFTER BUS OR TRAM STOPS, ON RESERVED PARKING PLACES, ENTRANCES OF ALL KINDS AND ON THE CARRIAGEWAY ADJACENT TO DOUBLE WHITE LINES OR TRAFFIC ISLANDS IF THE DISTANCE BETWEEN LINES OR ISLANDS AND THE PARKED VEHICLE WOULD BE LESS THAN 3 M. WHEN AN ACCIDENT OCCURS A DRIVER MUST STOP, GIVE ASSISTANCE AND SECURE THE ACCIDENT SITE. ACCIDENTS IN WHICH INJURY OR DAMAGE OCCUR MUST BE REPORTED TO THE POLICE.
