EYE INJURIES IN CAR ACCIDENTS

AUGENVERLETZUNGEN BEI AUTOUNFAELLEN

ON THE BASIS OF DATA RELATING TO PATIENTS AT THE EYE CLINIC AT GRAZ, BETWEEN 1973-1975, THE IMPORTANCE OF SAFETY BELTS IN THE PREVENTION OF EYE INJURIES IN CAR ACCIDENTS IS STUDIED. IT IS SHOWN THAT THE MOST IMPORTANT EYE INJURIES OCCUR GENERALLY IN THE COURSE OF "SLIGHT ACCIDENTS". THIS IS UNDERLINED BY THE FACT THAT IN THESE CASES LITTLE OR NO INJURY OCCURRED IN THE AREAS OUTSIDE THE EYE REGION. FROM THE DISCREPANCY BETWEEN THE SEVERITY OF EYE ACCIDENTS AND THE LOW DEGREE OF OTHER INJURIES AS WELL AS THE REPORTS OF THE PATIENTS ON THE ACCIDENT EVENT, IT HAS BEEN CONCLUDED THAT THE BELT PROTECTED THE EYES FROM ACCIDENTS TO AN EXCEPTIONAL DEGREE. THIS CONCLUSION IS REINFORCED BY A STATISTICAL EVALUATION OF THE INFORMATION PROVIDED BY PATIENTS.
