EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF TRAFFIC LAWS: OCCUPATION RATE/TRAFFIC FLOW CURVES

ETUDE EXPERIMENTALE DES LOIS DE TRAFIC : COURBES TAUX D'OCCUPATION/DEBITS

SENSORS INSTALLED ALONG A MAIN ROAD OR MOTORWAY PERMIT TO SIMULTANEOUSLY OBTAIN THE TRAFFIC FLOW AND OCCUPATION RATE (RELATION BETWEEN THE TIME A VEHICLE IS AT ONE POINT OF THE CARRIAGEWAY AND THE TOTAL MEASUREMENT TIME). AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO ESTABLISH THE RELATION BETWEEN THESE TWO VALUES BY AN EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH WITH THE HELP OF A COMPUTER. TWO SITUATIONS ARE CONSIDERED: TRAFFIC FLOWING FREELY AND CONGESTION. A BETTER CORRELATION WAS OBTAINED FOR THE SECOND SITUATION. ERRORS DUE TO THE MEASUREMENT PROCESS WERE HIGHLIGHTED DURING THE RESEARCH.
