COMMONWEALTH AVENUE BRIDGE-STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF FRICTION LOSSES IN PRESTRESSING

A METHOD IS DESCRIBED OF MEASURING FRICTION LOSSES IN EXTERNAL PRESTRESSING SYSTEMS, AND THE RESULTS OF MEASUREMENTS OF CABLE LOADS DURING STRESSING OF A MULTISPAN BRIDGE ARE ANALYZED. A GENERAL FORMULA IS DERIVED FOR THE FRICTION LOSS IN SUCH A SYSTEM. THE COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION IS DETERMINED, AND THE RELIABILITY OF THE RESULTANT VALUES IS TREATED STATISTICALLY. THE TRUE VALUE OF THE FRICTION COEFFICIENT PROVES TO BE HIGHER THAN ASSUMED DURING DESIGN. ERRORS IN THE METHOD OF MEASUREMENT ARE ANALYZED, AND IT IS CONCLUDED THAT VARIATIONS IN THE INDIVIDUAL RESULTS ARE DUE TO MEASURING ERRORS RATHER THAN TO VARIATIONS IN FRICTION LOSSES. THE PAPER ILLUSTRATES THE GENERAL STATISTICAL METHODS OF DETERMINING A NUMBER OF UNKNOWNS FROM A LARGER NUMBER OF OBSERVATION EQUATIONS AND OF ELIMINATING OBSERVATIONS CONTAINING SYSTEMATIC ERRORS. /AUTHOR/
