SUSPENSION CABLE MOVEMENT ANALYSIS

A METHOD OF DETERMINING STRESS AND STRAIN IN LOADED SUSPENSION CABLES IS PRESENTED THAT VARIES FROM PREVIOUS ANALYSES BY OTHER AUTHORS IN THREE RESPECTS: USE OF A COMPUTER OBVIATES THE NECESSITY OF MINIMIZING THE NUMBER OF ELEMENTAL LENGTHS INTO WHICH THE ENTIRE CABLE MAY BE DIVIDED, THUS AVOIDING THE COMPLEXITY OF CATENARY FUNCTIONS; THE COMPUTER GENERATES THE NECESSARY CONVERGENCE CORRECTIONS BY REPATING THE ANALYSIS WITH EACH OF THE ASSUMED INITIAL VARIABLES INCREASED BY A SMALL AMOUNT; PROGRAMMING IN A CONVERSATIONAL, TIME-SHARING MODE MAKES THE METHOD ACCESSIBLE TO SITE ENGINEERS, AND FOR DESIGN AS WELL AS ANALYSIS. THE METHOD ENCOMPASSES BOTH FIXED AND ROLLING VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL LOADS ACTING ON A CABLE BETWEEN TWO SUPPORTS. THE EFFECTS OF TEMPERATURE CHANGES AND FINITE VERTICAL, HORIZONTAL, AND CABLE SLIP STIFFNESS AT THE SUPPORTS ARE ALLOWED FOR.
