JOURNEYS IN AN URBAN ENVIRONMENT

LES DEPLACEMENTS EN MILIEU URBAIN

THE NUMBER OF DAILY JOURNEYS IN PARIS WAS 6900000 IN 1974. TO COPE WITH THESE JOURNEYS THE FOLLOWING IMPROVEMENTS WERE IMPLEMENTED: FOR THE PRIVATE CAR, IMPROVEMENT IN THE PRIMARY ROAD NETWORK, AND IN THE STREET EQUIPMENT, CONTROL OF PARKING - FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT, CREATION OF BUS LANES, CREATION OF PEDESTRIAN PRECINCTS. AS TRAFFIC FLOW EASED OFF, PARKING CONDITIONS IMPROVED. IT IS PREDICTED THAT IN 2000, JOURNEYS WILL REACH THE FIGURE OF 8060000. TO ACCOMMODATE THIS INCREASE, IT IS ENVISAGED TO POSTPONE IMPORTANT CONSTRUCTION WORK ON THE MAIN ROAD NETWORK, TO IMPROVE THE BUS NETWORK, THE CONTROL OF TRAFFIC SIGNALS AND THE USE OF STRUCTURES, AND PEDESTRIAN MOVEMENTS BY CREATING MORE PEDESTRIANIZED ZONES.
