INTERURBAN PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN EUROPE AND IN NORTH AMERICA

LES TRANSPORTS INTERURBAINS DE VOYAGEURS EN EUROPE ET EN AMERIQUE DU NORD

INTERURBAN PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN NORTH AMERICA IS BASED ON THE UTILISATION OF MOST EXPENSIVE TECHNIQUES (AEROPLANES, PRIVATE CARS), WHEREAS IN EUROPE THE RAILWAYS HAVE RETAINED THEIR IMPORTANCE. THE DIFFERENT MODES OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT ARE DESCRIBED WITH RESPECT TO ORGANISATION AND ROLE; TARIFFS ARE ALSO STUDIED. THE FACTORS DIFFERENTIATING TRANSPORT SYSTEMS ARE THEN REVIEWED. PUBLIC AUTHORITIES ALLOW COMPETITION TO DEVELOP, NEGLECTING THE NOTION OF PUBLIC SERVICE. THE CONDITIONS OF SPACE OCCUPANCY FORM AN IMPORTANT FACTOR DUE TO THE LONG DISTANCES INVOLVED. THE PRICE OF ENERGY, LOWER THAN IN EUROPE, IS ONE OF THE FACTORS WHICH FAVOURED THE UTILISATION OF TRANSPORT MODES WITH HIGH ENERGY CONSUMPTION.
