PEAK INDICES FOR THE CHARACTERIZATION OF HIGHWAY NOISE. MEASUREMENTS, PREDICTIONS, INTERPRETATION

THE AIM OF THIS STUDY IS TO EVALUATE THE PRACTICAL INTEREST OF A PEAK INDEX FOR THE CHARACTERIZATION OF HIGHWAY NOISE, IN TERMS OF MEASUREMENT AND PREDICTION. IT IS SHOWN THAT ONE MAY MEASURE A PEAK INDEX WITHOUT RECOURSE TO LONG-TERM REGISTERING OR RECORDING PERIODS: WITH A RECORDING OF 30 MN, L1 REMAINS STABLE AT A + 1.5 DBA EVEN FOR LOW LEVELS OF TRAFFIC (50 VEHICLES PER HOUR). AN EMPIRICAL FORMULA IS PROPOSED FOR ESTIMATING L1 BASED ON TRAFFIC PARAMETERS, AND THIS SHOWS THAT A MODEL OF THE STATISTICAL TYPE PROVIDES ESTIMATES OF L1, WITH SATISFACTORY ACCURACY, EVEN FOR CASES OF COMPLEX TRAFFIC AND SITES. IT IS ALSO SHOWN THAT A KNOWLEDGE OF THE PEAK INDEX PROVIDES ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR CHARACTERISING THE ACOUSTIC AMBIENCE AT A GIVEN POINT, INFORMATION WHICH IS NOT CONTAINED IN A MEAN INDEX SUCH AS LEQ, AND IT THEREFORE CONSTITUTES AN ADDITIONAL CONSTRUCTIVE ELEMENT OF DEFINITE PRACTICAL INTEREST.
