STRUCTURAL EVALUATION OF SCARF CONNECTIONS WITH EPOXY MORTAR CUSHIONING

STRENGTH AND STRUCTURAL BEHAVIOR OF SCARF CONNECTIONS WITH EPOXY-SAND MORTAR CUSHIONING WAS EXPERIMENTALLY INVESTIGATED IN FLEXURAL MEMBERS AND MEMBERS SUBJECT TO ECCENTRIC COMPRESSION. CONNECTIONS WITH U-TIES REPLACING THE BOLTS WERE COMPARED. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE USE OF EPOXY-SAND MORTAR AS A CUSHIONING MATERIAL SEALS THE JOINT, PREVENTS SLIP BETWEEN THE TWO COMPONENTS OF THE SCARF CONNECTION, AND OFFERS CONSIDERABLE TIME SAVING DUE TO THE EARLY DEVELOPED STRENGTH. THE TIED CONNECTIONS GAVE RESULTS COMPARABLE TO THOSE OF THE NONPRESTRESSED BOLTED CONNECTIONS. BASED ON OBSERVED BEHAVIOR AND FAILURE CRITERIA, CRITICAL SECTIONS ARE DEFINED AND METHODS FOR DESIGN OF SUCH CONNECTIONS ARE PRESENTED. /AUTHOR/
